Researchers at the Boston Biomedical Research Institute and at the University of Pennsylvania have a released a study whose results suggest that a chemical compound naturally occuring in green tea is a part of a chemical mixture that could be effective in the treatment of a number of brain disorders.

EGCG, which is a major component found in green tea, can prevent as well as attack and eliminate a type of protein structure known as amyloids, which are connected to the first stages and causes of some of the most common brain degeneration conditions. Conditions like Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s.

“These findings are significant because it is the first time a combination of specific chemicals has successfully destroyed diverse forms of amyloids at the same time. Our findings are certainly preliminary and we need further work to fully comprehend the effects of EGCG in combination with other chemicals on amyloids”, said Dr. Martin Duennwald of BBRI, one of the study’s authors.
