Results from a recent study suggest that a component of green tea shows promise in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. A research team from the Mayo Clinic carried out a clinical trial on 42 CLL patients.
For the research study, the patients were treated with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is a key component of green tea. On analysis, it was found that nearly 35% of the patients reported a 20% drop in leukemia cell count after being administered the non-toxic treatment including green tea component.
Despite promising outcome of the study, the researchers have cautioned that EGCG treatment should not be considered as a replacement for chemotherapy.
